Storing your window AC

If you haven’t done so already, the time is here to take out those window AC units and put them away for the season. Here in Western NY that means that we will be storing them for easily 7 or 8 months before it’s that time again. But what is the best way to store them?

Of course you will want to start with getting it out of the window. This may require more than one person and you may want to wear gloves (the fins on the back are very sharp and you don’t want your fingers to come in contact with them). Before you remove the unit, make sure that it is unplugged! You don’t want to be carrying it just to be held up by a plug! It is also best to have a towel out to place the unit on once you get it removed. It still may have water in it, plus it has been outside all summer and may be a little dirty. Once the unit it out, wipe it off to remove all of the dirt, grime, and the rest of the nasty stuff you don’t want on it. Also, check your filter. If it is a reusable one, vacuum or clean it per manufacturer’s instructions. If not, this may be the time to replace them (and with the season over you might be able to find some on clearance).

So now it’s clean and pretty and as good as new…but where do you put it? Well this depends on your living situation. If you have a home you more than likely have a few options such as your garage, basement, maybe your attic. If you are in an apartment this can be a little tricky. You may or may not have basement/attic storage which is nice and out of the way but you may have to either store it in some open floor space or even a closet. Once you have decided on an area placing it in a tote/trash can or wrapping it with an old sheet is ideal. You don’t want all of your hard work to go to waste and have to clean it all over again.
