Focus on Fairport, New York

FairportWhere can you find a delightful village situated on the Erie Canal that was a two-time Top 100 Winner of the “Best Place to Live in America”?  Fairport New York!  Located in the town of Perinton, Fairport is 9 miles east of Rochester and known as the “Crown Jewel of the Erie Canal”.  The village acquired its name from its reputation as a “fair port” during the busy days of the canal.

The village is full of historic homes and charming details.  Their landmark lift-bridge is world renown because of its unusual construction: it crosses the canal at a 32-degree bridgeangle and no two angles are the same!  The canal’s towpaths are perfect for recreational activities like jogging and biking.  It’s a scenic place to stroll during the warm summer mornings or afternoons.  The village even owns and operates its own municipal power corporation, Fairport Electric, providing its residents with lower rates than neighboring companies.  Interested in pop culture trivia?  Which Academy Award-winning actor is a Fairport native?  That would be Philip Seymour Hoffman!

Although picturesque, Fairport is not a sleepy village—there are plenty of seasonal activities and festivals for the whole family to enjoy.  One of the most highly anticipated festivals is the Fairport Canal Days, which takes place annually during the first full weekend of June; enjoy three days of arts, crafts, live music, and local food vendors.  Another highlight is the Annual Fairport Music and Food Festival in August.  The Lazy Days Sidewalk Sale, held the last weekend of August, is a village-wide shopping and dining event.  There are also the Cinco de Mayo Fiesta, Memorial Day Parade, Independence Day Parade, Scarecrow Festival in the fall, and Oktoberfest!  Celebrate the holidays at the Village Christmas Party during the “Come Home for the Holidays” activities.  From November to March enjoy open skating at the rink on Liftbridge Lane East at Fairport Junction.  Local produce is available from May to November at the Farmer’s Market each Saturday morning at the Village Landing.

Aphotore you a food connoisseur?  Who needs the Food Network’s suggestions when Fairport has plenty of delectable choices within walking distance.  There are plenty of places to choose from depending on your mood.  Check out Compané Brick Oven Bistro if you want some wonderful Italian and brick-fired pizza. Two other pizza places to consider are The Pizza Chef, for authentic New York style Pizza, and TK’s Pizzeria, a Fairport staple since 1975.  If you’re interested in casual pub food, try Donnelly’s Public House—they have numerous beers on tap—or Mulconry’s Irish pub.  Towpath Café is perfect for a light lunch or coffee.  For casual dinners there is the Fairport Village Inn—try the Prime Rib—and The Landing Bar and Grille—great for a Friday fish fry.  Looking for something more upscale?  The Cellar Door at the Green Lantern Inn is a nice place for an elegant lunch or dinner; they are also Vegetarian and Vegan friendly.  Another option is Joey B’s, voted Best French Restaurant on LocalEats.com.  If you need a recommendation for a great breakfast place, visit Riki’s or Durf’s Family Restaurant, known for their amazing breakfast sandwiches.
