HGTV is Coming to Rochester! Interview with Melissa DiMauro.

HGTV_HousesHuntersSo Melissa, the big news is that you will be on an episode of HGTV’s House Hunters helping your clients, John and Jessica, find a home in Rochester.  How did you get chosen to be on an episode?

Good question! Haha. There was a multi-step application process that we all had to go through, and I think in the end my buyers had a compelling story which would make for a fun show.

Whose idea was it to apply to the show?

My buyers approached me when we first began working together. They were huge fans of the show and asked if I’d be interested in applying with them. As a huge fan of the show myself, I was thrilled to give it a shot!

With the episode airing tomorrow, when was the footage actually shot?

We filmed over the summer – which is why it will look oddly pleasant and warm outside during the episode!

Tell us about the filming process and having a TV crew along for showings.

In a lot of ways it was the same as any other showing…but having a camera in the room makes you super-aware of where you are standing, if you’re speaking clearly…it took some getting used to!  I’d say after the first day of filming it was easier to get into a groove.

What was the best part of this experience for you?

I think it’s really neat to be a part of a show filmed right here in Rochester! And knowing that my buyers had such a memorable experience – not only did they end up purchasing their first home (an exciting time already), but they got to go through the process on one of their favorite shows. I feel so lucky to have been a part of that!

What was the hardest part of this experience?

It sounds silly, but waiting for the episode to air was the hardest! The experience of filming was so fun, and I couldn’t wait to see how it turned out.

What do you think John & Jessica appreciated most from this entire experience?

I can’t speak for them, of course, but I do think it’s a wonderful, unique family keepsake they can hold onto for their twin girls to watch when they get older.

Can you give us any hints of what viewers can expect to see Thursday?

Hmn…you’ll definitely see some compromises that will have to be made. They’re not only choosing a home; they’re choosing a community, so you’ll see more than one part of our area. And there are some parts of the show that will be entirely new to me, so I’m looking forward to some surprises, too!

What’s the best piece of advice you can give to anyone looking to purchase in the Rochester market?

Well, of course I’m going to say the first step is to find an agent to work with that can keep a close eye on what’s happening in the market. Things can change rapidly and knowing what to expect can help you plan your search – say, if you’re a contingent buyer in a competitive price range and area, you don’t want to be surprised by a bidding war!

Even if you’re just in the beginning stages of looking, having someone at the ready to call with any questions you might have – that’s very valuable.  I think buyers often are afraid to ask for an agent’s help until a purchase is imminent,  but I never mind- it’s what I’m here for!
